Google Celebrates 18th Birthday with a “Balloony” Doodle

The search Engine giant, Google is officially an adult today, 27th September 2016, with the celebration of its 18th birthday. The event is been marked by the display of an animated Doodle shown to web browsers around the world, today.

The company, founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin on the 4th of September in 1998, traditionally marks its birthday on the Google homepage on September 27. Although the research project began two years earlier.

Why 27th of September? The same question comes to my mind and not even Google seems to really know when it was formed. In 2013, on Google’s 15th birthday, Ryan Germick wrote a post which said: “When’s Google’s birthday? I’m not sure even we know – we’ve celebrated on September 7th, 8th, 26th, and, most recently the 27th.

Still, while there are some differing opinions about when to bust out the candles and cake, one fun fact is that our first doodle was posted even before it was officially incorporated (August 30th, 1998 vs. September 4th, 1998).”

Since 2006 till date, Google has always celebrated its birthday on September 27. It seems Google might have settled for 27th as that was the date it posted its first ever birthday Doodle in 2002. But this date has varied over the previous years.

In 2005, it’s 7th birthday Doodle went online September 26, its 6th birthday saw the Doodle shown to web browsers on September 7 and in the year before that, it was September 8.

This company, famous for its search feature, has transformed into a multinational technology company specializing in Internet-related services and products that include online advertising  technologies, search, cloud computing, and software.

On October 2, 2015, the tech giant restructured and reorganized its interests as a holding company called Alphabet Inc. It then became Alphabet’s leading subsidiary, as well as the parent for Google’s Internet interests.

18 years after it was founded at Stanford University, Google is one of the world’s most powerful companies. It had overtaken Microsoft in October 2012 to become 2nd most valued tech company after Apple, with a market capitalization of $541bn (£417bn).

Page and Brin are ranked 12th and 13th on Forbes’ list of the richest people in the world, with net worths of $35.2bn and $34.4bn respectively.

Congratulations Google.
