Early hour of today,  Apple’s iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus was launched, two devices with looks very similar to their predecessors with new innards and next-gen camera abilities. , the iPhone 7 debuts a cleaner new design and a host of unusual production methods, marking an end to iPhone 7 rumors and of course, iPhone 7 Pro controversy.

Whether or not you’ve been keeping yourself up to date with said string of news, if you’re here, you must be eager to get a rundown of the latest from Apple. Let’s jump right into an overview of the two models announced today to see exactly what is being offered with the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus.

Apple’s iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Specifications

Design

As for the nitty gritty, Apple’s sticking with comparative and superlative statements, like “40-percent faster processing” and “two-thirds the power” graphics performance when compared to the 6S’s A9. It’s “the most powerful chip ever in a smartphone,” and capable of rendering “400 flying monkeys” in Oz: Broken Kingdom. Expect to see companies like Chipworks tearing the A10 down to tell us exactly what’s inside once the 7 and 7 Plus are available.

One area that Apple has traditionally excelled in is cameras, but with the Galaxy S7 and Note 7, Samsung basically caught up this year, even besting the 6S and 6S Plus in some areas. To that end, Apple’s thrown improved cameras in both its new phones.

Colors

That new chassis gets shown off with a new Jet Black high-gloss finish. A second black, made of bead-blasted aluminum, has a matte logo, though there’ll also be gold, silver, and rose gold versions. On the Jet Black, the Apple logo is stainless steel; no matter which you get, the integrated antennas are perfectly seamless, as is the transition between aluminum and screen glass.

Camera

The camera experience is one of the differentiating factors between the two models, and one of the biggest upgrades to come to iPhone in a long, long time. It’s being touted as the highlight feature of the two new handsets.

Up front, for both devices, the new “FaceTime HD” camera ups the resolution from 5 to 7 megapixels. The big ticket item for the smaller model — following the addition of 4K video last year — is a new f/1.8 12-megapixel “low-light loving” camera with optical image stabilization. There’s also a new four-color LED flash, a “flicker-sensor” to avoid flickering lights in videos, RAW DNG capture and Apple says shutter lag is down to 25 milliseconds.

Optical image stabilization has been around in the larger iPhone models since their introduction, so with that ace removed from its sleeve, the 7 Plus is getting a new feature to differentiate itself: a dual-camera system. Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera system, not unlike that of the Tecno C9 Pro, Huawei P9 and the LG G5 – the trio devices working with two cameras that capture a single photo.

The new cameras, both at 12-megapixels operate together in ways we’ve seen before from other manufacturers. They’re set at different focal lengths — one wide, the other telephoto — which allows you to “optically zoom” to 2x by switching cameras. You do this by tapping on a button above the on-screen shutter key, and you can also swipe across to digital zoom up to 10x.

Later in the year, a “Depth Effect” update for the iPhone 7 Plus will add the ability to create – with real-time previews – bokeh effects in the backgrounds of shots by building a depth map from each frame. When you’re taking a photo, you can select a “portrait mode” that with a bit of (okay, probably a lot of) processing you’ll be able to choose different points of focus and add effects like blurry backgrounds.

Water and dust-resistant

Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone 7 Plus have been shown with a newly upgraded “water and dust resistant,” up to IP67 (i.e. splash proof, not submersible), as well.

Dual Stereo Speakers

The iPhone 7 have no headphone jack. The bottom of the device will be working with Stereo speakers instead, one out of each of two audio arrays.

Force-sensitive Touch ID/Home Button

The antenna bands on the back of the previous models have been made more discreet; they now hug the edges of the device. This repositioning has allowed Apple to squeeze in larger camera bumps on the back. The home button no longer physically clicks in, but a haptic feedback mechanism will trick your finger into thinking it has.

No 3.5mm Headphone Jack

Apple has removed the 3.5mm headphone jack from the bottom of the phone, but as expected that space hasn’t been occupied by a second speaker grille. You can now use Bluetooth for headphone connectivity, or the included new Lightning-enabled EarPods, or the included Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter to connect your regular old headphones to the new iPhone via Lightning port.

A10 Fusion Processor / M10 Coprocessor

The internal design brings some big changes which agrees with what KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo leaked. The new iPhones are powered Apple’s latest in-house SoC, the A10 Fusion. As usual, Apple isn’t giving firm figures on performance here. It says it’s 64-bit, 4-core chip, with 2 high-power cores and 2 low-power cores to save battery life. Apple’s iPhone 7 lasts two hours more than the iPhone 6S, while the iPhone 7 Plus lasts one hour more than that iPhone 6S, apparently.

Storage

So, we now have a phone that’s storing more image data than every before, along with potentially a short “Live Photo” video clip: We’re talking upwards of 6MB of storage taken up every time you press the shutter. To remedy that, Apple has finally dropped its much maligned 16GB storage option. The lowest storage tier is now 32GB, with the middle- and top-tier options now sitting at 128GB and 256GB, respectively. Essentially, they’ve doubled everything.

Apple is also offering an updated line of leather and silicon cases to complement the two new devices as well as $99 Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 7 available in White and Black colors. The Leather cases for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus start at $45 and $49 respectively, while the Silicon ones are available for $35 and $45 respectively.

Accessories

The two new Apple’s iPhone 7 models will ship with a set of new Lightning-enabled EarPods in the box in light of the 3.5mm headphone jack having been axed. Apple has also included a Lightning-to-3.5mm headphone adapter in the box for convenience.

In addition to this, Apple has also announced AirPods which are basically Apple’s new earbuds packing Bluetooth connectivity, and they are truly wireless. The AirPods will be available late October for $159.

Battery

Apple hasn’t detailed the capacity of the battery found in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, but it has stated that compared to the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 7 will last 2 hours longer under similar circumstances.

Release Date

Apple has confirmed that pre-orders for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will begin September 9, with shipping starting one week later on September 16th, 2016 in the following countries as outlined by Apple: “Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, UAE, the UK, US Virgin Islands and the US.”

Customers in other countries are expected to start receiving their order from September 23 onwards.
